美国人民还怀疑联邦政府在2008—2009年的金融危机中所起到的作用。总体来讲，他们不喜欢政府的一揽子救助计划。无论借方还是贷方都应该为自己的错误付出代价，纳税人是无辜的。如果政府揽下了坏账带来的道德风险，就会助长那些公司继续采取冒险行为。但国家经济崩溃的前景已使很多人都清醒过来：政府的救助计划有时还是必要的。有些保守人士甚至也认为一些公司“太大了因此不会破产”，这是因为这些公司会把经济的其他部分一起拉下水。情况危急时保守人士也会变成自由主义者。
然而从长远来看，人们对于政府权力扩张的反对情绪将会对美国有利。政府项目不断扩张，官僚主义昏庸无能，结束权利津贴制度也绝不可能。政府的项目如此铺张、如此复杂以至于连当局自己都不知道哪些项目在运行当中，更不要提操控这些项目了。就如同政治科学家艾拉·沙堪斯基（Ira Sharkansky）所说：“当代所有的国家都是福利国家，然而所有的福利国家都是混乱无章的。”因此，对政府项目的扩张持审慎的态度可能是明智之举。
